How to Get Ungated on Amazon in 2026 (Step-by-Step Guide)

Getting ungated on Amazon is one of the most common obstacles for new sellers. This guide covers exactly what Amazon requires, what commonly gets applications rejected, and how to get approved the first time.

What Does "Gated" Mean on Amazon?

Amazon restricts certain product categories and brands to protect buyers and brand owners from counterfeit goods and unsafe products. If a category or ASIN is gated, you will see a message saying "Apply to Sell" when you try to add that product to your inventory. You cannot list the item until Amazon approves your application.

Gating is not a punishment. It is a quality filter. The good news is that most ungating requests are approved if you submit the right documentation.

Which Categories Require Approval?

As of 2026, these categories commonly require approval before you can list:

Individual brands within open categories can also be gated. For example, a popular brand in the Health and Beauty category may require brand-specific approval even if the category itself is open to you.

What Amazon Requires to Ungate You

Amazon typically asks for invoices that prove you are sourcing legitimately. Here is exactly what they need:

Step-by-Step: How to Get Ungated

1Check if the category or ASIN is gated. In Seller Central, go to Catalog, click Add a Product, and search the ASIN. If it is gated, you will see an "Apply to Sell" button. Click it to start the application.
2Source from an authorized distributor. You need a legitimate wholesale invoice. This means ordering from a distributor or manufacturer that is authorized to sell that brand, not from a retail store. Companies like KeHE, UNFI, McLane, and similar regional distributors are good starting points for Grocery and Health categories.
3Get your invoice in order. Make sure the invoice shows your full legal business name, your registered address, the product name and quantity (10 or more units), the supplier's business name and contact info, and the invoice date.
4Submit through Seller Central. Go back to the "Apply to Sell" page, upload your invoices as PDF files, and submit. Amazon may also ask for your business license or website depending on the category.
5Wait for a decision. Amazon typically responds within 2 to 5 business days. If approved, you can start listing immediately. If rejected, they will tell you why and you can resubmit after fixing the issue.

Common Reasons Applications Get Rejected
